San Francisco

Our cities pay homage to certain human beings and certain human events with site specific monuments but rarely, if ever, is homage paid to the plants and animals that once lived where our cities now stand.

The San Francisco Civic Center area was originally marshy dunes where water from the Hayes Valley River among other streams gathered in the basin, creating a habitat for a wealth of marsh plants and animals before emptying into the northern end of Mission Bay (which is now completely filled).

This project temporarily resurrects the original ecosystem of the Civic Center site. A 12 by 80 foot native marsh is juxtaposed with the buildings, streets and sidewalks of present day Civic Center.
