Collaborations with Snails

These pieces are from a series of works in which I collaborate directly with animals. In these works the snail's slime trails are dusted with brass dust much like police dust for fingerprints. The dust adheres permanently to the slime trail leaving gold trails.

Seven Hour Spiral

This pieces documents seven hours spent working with a Banana slug to move in a spiral pattern. The line records both the artist’s control and lack of control over the slug during the process.

Fifteen Free Snails

In this piece unlike the Seven Hour Spiral, fifteen snails were released and allowed to roam freely from the center of three sheets of paper. The resulting patterns document the movements of the self-guided snails. Instead of a drawing determined by the aesthetics of the artist, these drawings are determined by the unknown desires of another species.
